Eco-Thanksgiving Tip: Buy Local Food - Portland Farmer's Market

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it, and in the weeks leading up to the big day, I'll be posting about ways to 'green' up your celebration. I love Thanksgiving, but this holiday definitely lends itself to many indulgences! Since one of our biggest gifts to be thankful for is our planet earth, we should all find ways to preserve it while we plan our festivities.

Once you've decided on your menu, one top tip which is sure to make your holiday dinner even tastier, is to shop for your ingredients and produce at your local farmers market. Be sure to take your children along on this shopping excursion, so they may learn from an early age to support small farmers and buy organic, locally grown produce. Introduce your kids to the farmers selling their goods, and help establish a sense of community and pride in choosing fresh crops to promote better health for your family and the planet. They may also actually want to try to eat their veggies when they have been involved in picking them out and meeting the farmers who grew them!

Portland has several amazing farmers markets
, my favorite of which is Saturdays, 9:30am to 2:00pm, at the South Park Blocks at PSU. This market features a hearty offering of gluten and wheat free items, which is absolutely delightful for me! I eat my way through this place.

November 22nd, the Portland farmers market at this same location is hosting their "Thanksgiving Feastival," featuring chef demonstrations and live entertainment. Click here for more details on Portland area farmers markets.

Visit Local Harvest here to find farmers market events near you!

I am so jealous of you being in Portland!! I went there several years ago for an autism conference and loved it! They are very progressive with alternative medicine and seem to truly get the autism "thing". My sister went to school in Oregon and loved it. It is even more "granola" than she was use to coming from Colorado. Have fun!!
