Let Your Fingers Do the Opting Out

I really can't stand the sight of phone books on my doorstep. Seriously, when is the last time you used a phone book? Who needs one when we have the internet at our disposal, and even Yellow Pages has a website now, so why in the world do they keep killing trees and wasting gas delivering phone books? Advertising money, that's why. But why aren't advertisers smart enough to realize this is a dying medium and their money would be much better spent elsewhere?

I have read many articles on how it's not possible to opt out of phone book delivery, much to my chagrin. But I recently stumbled upon a site called YellowPagesGoesGreen.org, which offers a ray of hope amidst the piles of phone books. You may sign up here to stop receiving phone book deliveries. There is fine print involved with this request, and here's how YellowPagesGoesGreen explains the process:

When I sign the form am I automatically removed from having the telephone book delivered?
There is no national no-delivery organization like the National Do Not Call Registry. Individual Yellow and White Page organizations state that you can call them and they will put you on a list to not deliver books. But they are not held liable or accountable if the book shows up anyway. www.YellowPagesGoesGreen .org will contact the publishers with the sign up forms to have them "opt out" the individual or business that signs up. It will be the responsibility of the publishers to act in accordance to the consumer’s demands.

In the meantime, if phone books keep showing up on your doorstep, enter your city here, and learn where you may take them to be recycled.

I am really glad that YellowPagesGoesGreen is in existence, and I hope publishers catch on that we need trees a lot more than we need phone books!

I live in a building with 120 apts. and 120 phone books get dropped off in our lobby. By the end of the week abut 100 of them are simple put out to be recycled without ever seeing the inside of an apartment. I feed ours to our worms, but not everyone has that option. I am going to look into opting the whole building out.

Hi Organic Needle! Feeding phone books to worms... now that's an idea I wouldn't have thought of! Thanks for reading Petite Planet and for trying to get your whole building out of phone book pile-up!

My name is Philip Cantwell and I started the organization www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org. Petite Planet and everyone else that has posted here can contact me at our site at anytime and we will get back to you. We are NOT affiliated with the Yellow Page Publishers. We are a 3rd party organization that contacts the publishers on behalf of people that sign up at www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org to stop the delivery of books. Some of the publishers accept the request and some do not. We have had thousands of signs up and continue to get hundreds per day.

www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org has worked with organizations around the world in setting up similar sites to stop the unsolicited deliver of telephone books. We are currently working with some local governments on the proper working of ordinances to ban the unsolicited delivery of telephone books and have been contacted by a US Senator who wants to review our registry system.

I happen to be one of the owners of MyJunkTree and as a new company I search the web to see if we are getting any visibility out there and I post on relevant blgs.

We launched the company because we were tired of all the junk mail we were receiving and we personally did not want to bounce all over the web to contact all the different companies to stop it all. First and foremost we wanted to let people choose what they wanted to let come to their home knowing that some people really do like some of the coupons and catalogs. So our clients choose what they want stopped.

We also had to provide a service that is different than the other services out there, so here is what we offer:

1. We have a database of over 1300 catalogs that you can choose to stop.
2. We have over a 2000 charities/Non-Profits that you can stop solicitations from.
3. Stop the delivery of the national phone directories.
4. Stop the delivery of the weekly coupons.
5. Stop the general credit card offers as well as the ones from your own major bank.
6. Stop the miscellaneous junk mail from the data brokers.
7. You can register on the National Do Not Call Registry from the website.
8. You can order your no strings attached free annual credit report right from the website.
9. We plant trees with every new membership.

And, yes we are a paid service and yes you can do everything that we do for free, if you want to do all the research and spend the time contacting the companies yourself it can easily be done. We have just done all of the legwork for our clients and feel there is value in the service we provide.

In addition to opting out of your phone book you can now opt out of your local paper. No more free papers stacking up on the driveway.
