Non-toxic, BPA-Free Teethers from Sassy

While I love the aesthetic and sustainability factor of wooden teethers, I (or my teething babes rather) seem to have better luck and garner more relief from the plastic teethers that are filled with water and chilled before chewing sessions. On another note, I was disturbed to hear about the recent recall of Hyland's teething tablets, which were the homeopathic remedy I used for Olivia when she sprouted her first tooth at three months old. Now more than ever, I am seeking non-medicinal teething soothers, and luckily, Sassy offers an adorable variety of BPA- PVC- and phthalate free teethers that fit the bill and then some.

Sassy teethers feature vibrant colors and textures that are sure to entertain and stimulate babies while they sink their teeth in. These savvy teethers double as toys that encourage babies to explore and learn about their senses.

The ladybugs and the heart and peace sign come in packs of two and are reasonably priced around $4-$5. If you're looking for a way to help your little one relieve his gums, I highly recommend Sassy's engaging teething toys!

Sassy also makes delightful, non-toxic bath toys for tub time!

Sassy, Inc. provided these products for my review free of charge.

Green Your Drycleaning Regimen with the 'Green Garmento' Reusable Drycleaning Bag!

One baby step we can all take to leave a lighter footprint on the planet is to either a) do away with having your clothes drycleaned altogether (which I have done!) or b) tote a reusable garment bag to drop off and pick-up your drycleaning in, as not to add to the immense waste of the plastic bag liners (not to mention hangars!) used to encase clean clothes. Since doing away with drycleaning altogether may not be feasible for some, there are ways to make the process more eco-friendly.

Each year, more than 300 million pounds of single-use plastic drycleaning bags fill our landfills and waterways. Enter Green Garmento: a recyclable 4-in-1 reusable garment bag that may be used as:

1. Laundry Bag
2. Hamper
3. Duffle Bag to tote dirty clothes
4. Garment Bag

Think of it in the same vein as toting reusable grocery bags to the store. Logically, we should replace all of the plastic bags we use with reusable bags, and I think the Green Garmento is ingenious for offering that eco alternative.

Bonus points for taking your own hangars to and from the drycleaners! And be sure to use an eco-friendly/green drycleaner if your clothes require drycleaning!

Motherlove Diaper Rash & Thrush Salve

I'm always on the lookout for great, all-natural diaper creams, so I was delighted to come across such a pure remedy for baby's bottom: Motherlove's organic diaper rash and thrush salve.

Motherlove has been a leader in the holistic body care industry since 1990, and Motherlove products boast an unbeatable ZERO toxicity level, as determined by the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database.

I love that this premium salve offers two-in-one protection to heal and protect against both diaper rash and thrush -- after all, multi-tasking is a mom's middle name. The pure ingredients offer such peace of mind when it comes to placing this product on your baby's vulnerable skin: extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, oregon grape root, myrrh, yarrow, calendula. It is the perfect, soft consistency, not oily, and leaves no residue -- just a light barrier of soothing protection.

Additionally, Motherlove supports the social environment with their Nurturing Life Foundation, which promotes breastfeeding and supports mothers-in-need nationwide. "Over 10% of all Motherlove Herbal Company's profits are donated to organizations that truly help nurture life, like The Maternal Wellness Center, Realities for Children and The Mountain Park Environmental Center."

Check out Motherlove's wonderful collection of products for babies, moms-to-be, moms during the postpartum period and breastfeeding moms!

Note: While I previously stated that this diaper cream was organic, I received the following correction from Motherlove:

"While 96% of the ingredients in the salve are USDA certified organic, 4% (Oregon grape root and myrrh) of the ingredients are only available as wildcrafted herbs and are not certified at this point in time. If Oregon grape root and myrrh were on the list of approved herbs maintained by the National Organic Program (governed by the USDA), the Diaper Rash & Thrush would be 100% organic."

REVIEW: The Honest Kitchen - Natural, Human Grade, Dehydrated Dog & Cat Food

This is a guest post written by Tracie Berger, mom of rescue dogs Nina and Kona.

In the last two years, I’ve taken a serious interest into what goes into both human and canine food, and unfortunately I have learned that the pet food industry can be just as deceptive as the human food industry. Even the most expensive, so called “holistic” brands are not what they say they are.  More than half the ingredients on some dog food labels are “code” for unhealthy fillers. “Dried beet pulp” sounds like a vegetable, right? Wrong. It is a byproduct resulting from the extraction of simple sugars in the manufacture of table sugar. Many pet food companies are subsidiaries of human food companies, pumping leftovers and byproducts from our food into our pets’ food to minimize their waste.

Nina, Kona and I took a temporary reprieve from “sit” and “stay” in our obedience class last week to talk with the trainers regarding some rather scary facts about what we’re actually feeding our beloved pets. Thank goodness we did, because they opened our eyes to a wonderful company called The Honest Kitchen, operating right in my hometown of San Diego and truly the most “honest” pet food company I’ve ever come in contact with.

The Honest Kitchen was founded in 2002 by Lucy Postins, (above) who enjoyed making home-prepared raw meals for her Rhodesian Ridgeback, but wanted to find a more time-effective alternative. Lucy devised a way to dehydrate the healthy, raw ingredients so that water could be added to each meal to turn it back into “real food.” Lucy’s and The Honest Kitchen’s principles are simple: “We will only produce our pet foods using the gentle method of dehydration to remove just the moisture from our whole food ingredients. We will always raise the bar in choosing our raw ingredients and never leave procurement to anyone else. We’ll respect our planet by choosing organic ingredients whenever we can and always choose sustainability over cost – like our free-range chicken and line-caught wild haddock, fair-trade quinoa, non-genetically-modified produce and recycled, compostable packaging. We continue donating a portion of our profits to charity every month.”

Among my pups’ favorite products from The Honest Kitchen is “Keen”, a low–gluten dehydrated dog food featuring hormone-free USDA turkey, organic oats, potatoes, carrots, apples and honey. Now, at first glance, dehydrated dog food can be a bit strange, but trust me… add the water and watch the very obvious ingredients come to life!  What a concept – actually serving a dog food that I would eat too!  I didn’t get the bowl to the ground before Nina and Kona were jumping up on me to bask in the smell of the new sensation.

Another great product from The Honest Kitchen are “Pecks,” hand-made, bite-sized buffalo and blueberry cookies. I use these tiny treats during our training class, they fit perfectly in my pocket and my stubborn Nina REALLY pays attention to my commands when Pecks are the reward!  “Pecks” consist of 100% human grade barley flour, filtered water, molasses, buffalo, organic coconut oil and blueberries and they contain no artificial preservatives, flavors or colors.

Kona and Nina
My favorite product from The Honest Kitchen are the versatile “Ice Pups.” They can be served three ways – as a warm, nourishing broth, a cool beverage, or as frozen treats!  “Ice Pups” are made from dehydrated chicken, turkey, whey, dandelion, asparagus, watercress, honey and parsley. I bought an ice tray, poured the liquid into it and have some “Ice Pups” freezing as we speak.  It should be very entertaining to watch Nina and Kona enjoy them! I’ve even heard cats are a fan of the “Ice Pups” too!

Bottom line is, I want my pets to eat a grain-free, whole food diet that I believe will enrich their lives and keep them with me as long as possible, and The Honest Kitchen’s products are truly that – honest.  The Honest Kitchen’s website is a wealth of information about their wonderful product line, amazing ingredients and sincere commitment to people, pets and the earth. I am now a fan and customer of theirs for life.

'Stella McCartney Kids' Vegan, Organic Clothing for Little Ones

Remember last year when I reported that Stella McCartney had teamed up with The Gap to launch a collection?

Well, just in time for the holidays, designer Stella McCartney has gifted us with her own collection of kids clothing, which hit stores last week. Peruse her adorable and stylish apparel for babies, boys and girls online here.

A lifelong vegetarian and environmental activist, Stella does not use any fur or leather in her designs, and she uses organic cotton in several pieces... (I wish the entire line was organic, but it's a start!)

Gluten-Free, Vegan Gourmet Baking Mixes from Purely Elizabeth

When I tell people I'm a "gluten-free vegan" I mostly get audible "ughs" and noticeable winces in reply, followed by the question, "What do you eat?" No doubt, this diet is high-maintenance -- but I feel lucky that the marketplace is quickly evolving to accommodate people like me with specialized needs when it comes to food.

When I heard about Purely Elizabeth, of course I was ecstatic. Baking mixes that are both gluten free and vegan? Brilliant! They are also all-natural and organic! And before you ask "why not bake from scratch?" It's because I am short on time with two small children, and the amount of ingredients required to make GF baked goods is often gargantuan and pricey!

Olivia and I whipped up a batch of Purely Elizabeth chocolate chip cookies in no time, as Ashton took a cat nap.

All we had to add to the mix was applesauce, olive oil, and vanilla. I would recommend using a good quality olive oil that you like the taste of, because it is really evident in the taste of the cookies. Also, these cookies have a lot of texture due to the nature of their ingredients which are:

Organic Millet Flour, Organic Coconut Palm Sugar, Chocolate Chips (Evaporated Cane Juice, Chocolate Liquor, Non-Dairy Cocoa Butter), Organic Almond Flour, Garbanzo Fava Bean Flour, Organic Chia Seeds, Baking Soda, Sea Salt.

See our baked cookies above. I devoured them, and Olivia loved them too! I really love that Purely Elizabeth products are made with nutrient rich flours, superfood seeds, organic ingredients, and that they are free of refined sugar, preservatives and GMO's.

The line includes a delectable array of gourmet cookie, muffin and pancake mixes that will all satiate your sweet tooth in a healthy manner!

Q. Were Cavemen and Cavewomen Better Parents than Modern-Day Moms & Dads? A. Yes.

This article,  "Why Cavemen were better parents than we are today" is definitely worth a read. It solidifies my notion that attachment parenting is indeed the healthiest way to raise a child. The picture above illustrates how detached society has become when caring for kids. This separation will only harm future generations, as quoted in the article:

"There's an epidemic of anxiety among the young... Kids who don't get the emotional nurturing they need in early life tend to be more self-centered. They don't have the same compassion- related emotions as kids who were raised by warm, responsive families."

It's ironic that modern-day society views cavemen as inferior, while in this case, they clearly were wiser than most parents are today, with regard to raising children. Food for thought that all parents should digest...

Pretty Pushers Organic Birthing Gown

I never plan on giving birth again, but I certainly wish I had treated myself to this lovely, organic cotton delivery gown on either of my birthing occasions. When I entered the hospital to have both of my children, I put on the standard issue, super-blah hospital gown. Of course, I figured, why bother wearing something nice when it's just going to get extremely ruined? But these Pretty Pushers have changed my thinking to "why not?"

Made in the USA from 100% organic cotton, each gown features a slip-on halter neck and a diagonal cut and openings that provide access for fetal monitors, an epidural, and other IVs if needed.

Think of how few times you'll give birth in your life... you deserve a beautiful garment in which to own this powerful, life-changing experience. Although the company touts this as a one-time use gown, buy it early on in your pregnancy and enjoy it as a maternity nightie in the months leading up to the big event.

Pretty Pushers organic cotton gown is available here for $45.

It's the Little Things...

It's the little things I remember about my early childhood: the first time I blew a bubble with gum, (in the back of the station wagon on a summer road trip) the first time I tied my shoelaces (on the floor in our foyer on the way out our front door).

So when I saw this enchanting windshield rainbow, it reminded me of a memory that would leave a happy, magical impact on a child. It's so easy to achieve as well.

As seen above, simply squirt a small glob of acrylic paint in every color of the rainbow in front of your windshield wiper, and then turn the wipe on for your kids to ooh and aah. This would be a fun way to end a road trip... but I wouldn't suggest driving with it on your windshield. Although, how cool would it be to always be at the end of a rainbow?
