Upcycle T-shirts into a Cute Dress for Spring
Miss O is growing like a weed, which means I just cleared out another batch of "too small" clothing from her dresser and closet. I send her sweet apparel off to two of my neighbors with little girls, so I know her threads are going on to have a fun second life... but I really wish I was crafty and could sew because I'd love to make a keepsake dress such as the adorable one seen above. The creative mom at I am Momma Hear Me Roar used stamps to breathe new life into old T-shirts, and then she sewed strips of the T-shirts together to create a cute new dress. I think this would be such a fun way to pay homage to outgrown articles of clothing, extending their life and keeping them in circulation that much longer!

Organic Scarves For Boys from Sewn Natural
My pal Jen over at Sewn Natural has added some delightful scarves for little boys to her gorgeous collection of handmade, organic wares. This organic cotton mustache scarf is so cheeky and fun, and totally on trend with the moustache craze of late. If skulls and crossbones are more your little man's speed, here's a delightful organic pirate scarf as well!

Snug Organics 100% Organic Cotton Sherpa Sleeper Makes Tots Extra Cuddly
I have a real soft spot for companies that are started by parents in an effort to give their children high-integrity products, while helping to preserve the future of the planet. Snug Organics is a family owned company based in Denver, Colorado, run by founders and parents Erin and Erik. As a school teacher, Erin was alarmed by the rising incidence of learning and developmental disabilities amongst today's generation of children (such as autism and ADHD -- both of which have been linked to a child's exposure to environmental toxins and chemicals). Read here and here for more info on the impact of these toxins and their relation to childhood disorders.

Hip Organic Cotton Clothing from All Good Living Kids
I recently came across a cool eco-conscious clothing label for babies and kids: All Good Living Kids. I love that their collection contains hip, cheeky graphics that are typically hard to find on an organic cotton tee or onesie.
One of my favorites from their collection is the onesie shown above, which also comes in toddler T-shirt sizes. The retro boombox, cassette tape, decks, headphones, record and speakers really speak to Mr. A, who is completely enchanted with rock n' roll -- and since daddy used to be a DJ, he digs the shirt as well!
Another one of my faves from the collection, is the "So my story begins" onesie (also available as a shirt and short-sleeve onesie). Of course, as a writer, I find the old-fashioned typewriter so charming, and I love the reminder that as parents, we are helping write our children's life story with every action we take, all day long.
They also have a really sweet trike collection of clothing with "I trike California" and many other locales written across the onesie or tee.
The founders of All Good Living Kids have three children themselves, so they are invested in protecting the planet to preserve their future. All of their garments are ethically made in the USA using 100% organic cotton, green screen-printing and low-impact dyes. They team up with "independent artists and graphic designers to present an innovative and socially aware kid’s collection."
There are SO many wonderful designs in the All Good Living Kids collection, so be sure to check them out for your kiddos, as something is sure to resonate with you while relaying your child's unique personality as well.

Merino Kids Baby Hoodie Keeps Little Ones Cozy & Stylish
Holiday gifts for kids don't always have to center around toys. Keepsake clothing also makes a wonderful present, and I love this Merino Kids Baby Hoodie for all the little guys on your list.
Made of super soft New Zealand Merino fabric, this sweater is casual enough for playtime but may also be dressed up for a special occasion. I also like that it has a scoop neck which enables the hood to easily fit over your tot's head, and stay put.
Additionally, merino is allergy-safe and fire resistant and it absorbs moisture when tots get hot and keeps them warm when they're cold.
Today I layered this sweet sweater over Mr. A's other adorable Merino Kids long-sleeved top, and I loved that the fit wasn't bulky and that layering his clothes didn't put him at risk of overheating. He looked super cute and stylish while staying warm.
Another one of my favorites from the Merino Kids collection is their baby sleep sack. Mr. A wears his to bed every night. Read my extensive review of Merino Kids sleep sacks here. This sleep sack would also be a lovely gift for that special baby or toddler in your life.
Merino Kids Hoodie is available in sizes 6-12 months and 12-14 months.

Guavamitts from Guavakids Keep Baby's Hands Cozy and Germ Free
Parents know all too well how frustrating it can be trying to keep tiny mittens to stay put on teeny hands. So when I came across these adorable new mittens for wee ones, I had to share them with you -- because I wish they had been around for my kids!
Guavakids, a duo of Portland mamas, makes these sweet mittens, called guavamitts, which are made from a super soft, cozy and eco-friendly bamboo blend. Their two-part closure system ensures they stay on, and their engaging designs keep baby intrigued.
These mittens are not only cute accessories to keep baby's hands warm on chilly days and nights, they are also great for keeping germs at bay during the upcoming cold season.
If you're in the Portland area, pick up a pair of Guavakids mittens at Grasshopper, one of my favorite toy stores, which is also a Petite Planet sponsor! Or purchase online here.

Satch & Sol Fair Trade 100% Wool Slippers Keep Tiny Toes Toasty
Back in 2009, I wrote a post about how important it is for both the sanctity and the sanitation of the household, to remove your shoes at the door. We have been doing so in our house for the last 4 years, and I wish we had started sooner!
There's nothing like slipping into a cozy pair of beloved slippers once you leave the outside world behind and enter your 'castle.' We are all slipper fanatics around here, even Miss O. Admittedly, she has gone through several pairs in her 4 years on earth, but we've just found the cutest, most beautifully made and eco-friendly slippers she's had the pleasure of wearing yet: Pups slippers from Satch & Sol.
Handmade by the Artists of Mongolia, a fair trade artisan cooperative, using traditional felting and knitting techniques, these sweet, 100% wool pups slippers include thoughtful details such as ears that stick out, felted eyes and a felted nose, which are securely and expertly hand stitched, and they are seamless, making them super comfortable. They also boast a plush black and brown suede sole to cushion little feet.
The Satch & Sol slippers collection includes an array of adorable slippers for babies, big kids, and adults! All are crafted with the same integrity outlined above, and there's a style and color to suit everyone's fancy.
I also want to add that run of the mill kids slippers are usually made with synthetic soles and materials, and since feet sweat a lot, especially when tucked into a warm slipper, we've had issues with "stinky feet." Since Satch & Sol slippers are comprised of 100% wool, we haven't experienced any smelly toes, after constant, very enthusiastic wear.
Miss O never wants to take her pups off her feet, and she even named them Nick and Sally (from Dr. Seuss.) What a fun way to uphold the ritual of leaving shoes by the door to enter your sacred niche on earth.

'Fall' in Love with Nature Baby Organic Merino Wool Apparel for Babies and Tots
It's still very much summertime in California, but I am looking forward to crisp fall weather, which I hope is around the corner! Part of the fun is dressing the kids in cozy, adorable clothing, and Nature Baby's collection of 100% organic wool clothing is simply divine.
While I love the entire line, the casual drawstring pants and the chic long sleeve kimono top suit Mr. A to a tee. In addition to being made in New Zealand from organic merino wool that is grown and processed without the use of harmful chemicals, I love that these toddler essentials are easy to crawl in, toddle in, and are comfortable enough to snooze in for naptime as well! All while being ever so stylish, understated and eco-friendly!
One thing I have also learned as a mom is that drawstring pants are ingenious. They enable you to buy clothing that's a bit too large for your tot, but that can be cinched down to fit -- so your wee one, who grows at the speed of light, may actually have a pair of pants that tightens, loosens and lasts!
Nature Baby organic merino wool clothing is also sumptuously soft, lightweight, durable, non-irritating, and provides premium insulation.
Be sure to check out Nature Baby's organic cotton clothing, organic bedding and organic sleepwear as well!

gDiapers Debuts Sweet, Eco Accessories for Cloth Diapered Green Babies!
In honor of Earth Day, I'd like to beckon everyone who is still using disposable diapers to make the switch to using cloth diapers! To sweeten the endeavor, gDiapers has debuted some adorable, very handy accessories to make your mission stylish and simpler.
Check out their cute new, gCamper pant and gCamper tee (the shirt says: "I'm having an environmental movement") ensemble that's perfect for little boys heading out in warm spring and summer weather. Match the stylish top to the sweet plaid gPants and you're off! And if you have a little girl, don't miss the gFlutter dress that will look so precious paired with the matching gFlutter gPants!
On the home front, make laundering baby's cloth diapers even easier with the new gLaundry bag. The waterproof bag boasts a clever design: a square shape to fit most diaper pails -- and once it's time to do clean the diapers, you can tote the bag to the washing machine, toss in the contents, along with the machine washable bag itself, then start the load!
On the go, be sure to tuck the new gWetbag into your diaper bag to store soiled gPants. This multipurpose bag is also perfect for housing wet clothes, swimsuits, and even baby wipes. It is also waterproof, machine washable, and may be used long after your diapering days.
Happy green diapering, today and beyond!

Organic Cotton Hand-Knit Baby Hats from Beanie Designs
Rainy, chilly weather is still very much in the spring forecast in Portland, and in many other parts of the world as well. The upside is, there's still good reason to put a sweet little hat on baby's head to keep him warm and dry. I love Beanie Designs' hand-knit organic cotton hats, which come in an array of designs and colors. My top pick is this adorable organic cotton ear flap baby hat because it keeps your little one's ears and head warm, and it has ties to secure it from falling off and getting lost. It is available in the versatile colors shown below.
In addition to admiring this collection, I like the fact that Beanie Designs was started by a mom whose husband taught her how to crochet! Sounds like something that would happen in my own household. Owner Yacine designs and crochets each hat along with a talented group of artists who help her create each hat by hand. Your babe is surely getting a high-quality, one-of-a-kind hat made with love.
Hop over to Beanie Designs to find an eco-friendly topper for your tot!

And since they are one-size fits all, they're just about the only item of apparel your little one won't outgrow in what seems like minutes!
Charlie Banana offers an adorable collection of organic cotton leg warmers for boys and girls. Choose between blue stripes, purple butterflies, or pink floral designs for your babies and big kids. Just look at how precious they look on my sweet ballerina!

UPDATE: Little Beetle Learners - Organic Cotton Training Pants
Update as of 2/25/11: After the overnight accident incident, as promised, I said I'd post about absorbency. Well, I'd say these learner pants are great for daytime, smaller spills and "oops!" accidents where a little one may run to the potty quickly, but for heavy-duty overnight soaking incidences, they don't do the trick...
Everyone always talks about cloth diapers, but I never see any articles on cloth training pants. Popular 'Pull-ups' are just as bad for the environment, but what's a mom to do when her toddler can stay dry during the day, but still needs protection from "accidents" overnight... and doesn't want to go back to wearing the now dreaded diaper?
Little Beetle Learner organic cotton velour training pants are a great, comfortable option for your 'wee-ing' ones. They are made from 100% organic, Fair Trade cotton, and they are free of all the chemicals that are inherent in disposable training pants. Presenting a brand new pair of these cloth pants to your tot will also help her maintain the psychology that she is indeed out of diapers, but may still need some assistance from these "big girl" underpants, day or night.
Little Beetle Learners are luxuriously soft, and they feature side snaps so they're easily removable in case of an accident, but I do wonder, when put to the test, whether they will be able to contain a large amount of pee overnight. The company who makes Little Beetle Learners, Better for Babies, recommends toddlers wear their Organic Wool Diaper Cover over the Little Beetle Learner for extra absorption. As my daughter continues to wears these overnight, I will re-post as to whether they are highly absorbent on their own, or whether parents should definitely buy the wool diaper cover as well. But alas, I am hoping there are no accidents that will put them to the test!
