5 Finishing Touches for Your Thanksgiving Meal

thanksgiving hosting, thanksgiving games, thanksgiving place cards, thanksgiving finishing touches, host thanksgiving, thanksgiving ideas, thanksgiving drinks
As we all scurry about to serve up a Thanksgiving feast and host friends and family this Thursday, here are five easy and frugal finishing touches to add to your celebration -- sometimes the smallest details can make the biggest difference!

Materials You Will Need:
  • Scratch paper- look for festive colors, you will only need small pieces, along with festive stickers
  • Mixed nuts in their shell
  • Small pine cones
  • Glitter- gold works best
  • A bit of paint- brown, orange or yellow will do
  • Glue
  • Clothespins- one for each place card
  • Letter stickers- or a pretty pen to write the names of your guests
  • Ribbon
1) Serve yummy non-alcoholic drinks for your young guests and as a fun alternative for adults and designated drivers. Find a variety of delicious non-alcoholic drink ideas at Martinelli's. I made the Martinelli's Mimosa pictured above.
Ingredients: 2 ounces of Martinelli's organic sparkling apple cider, 2 ounces of orange juice, 1/2 of a lemon. Mix all ingredients together in a pitcher, then sugar the rim of your glass and pour. Garnish with an orange slice. Instead of using expensive glass charms, I simply tied a pretty ribbon around the glass and added a festive confetti leaf.

2) Make easy and elegant place cards using scratch paper and clothespins. To make these place cards, attach your festive sticker to the left hand corner of your place card and either write the guest's name or spell it out using letter stickers. Cut your paper, then you can layer it on top of several other colors of paper. Paint your clothespin and sprinkle glitter on it. Clip your place card onto the clothespin so it stands upright.

3) Make your own favor boxes filled with treats by decorating recycled boxes with easy to find items. To make the favor box, simply get a small recycled box, I used an old jewelery box -- cut some of your scratch paper to cover the lid. Glue it onto the lid top. Sprinkle some glitter onto nuts or a small pine cone. Glue ribbon, pine cone and nuts, in any variety you would like, to the box top. Place a paper cupcake liner inside the box and fill with chocolate or other treats.

4) Arrange reusable "to go boxes" for your guests. We all know the downside of not hosting the Thanksgiving dinner means sometimes going home empty handed -- and missing one of the best parts of the holiday -- the leftovers! If you are hosting, it is a nice touch to have "to go" containers available for those who might want to sneak an extra piece of pie, or some turkey for a midnight sandwich. Put sticky labels out so guests may label what they are taking home.

5) Play Thanksgiving Pictionary. Use scratch paper to write down Thanksgiving terms, (ie: turkey, pilgrim, giving thanks, etc.). Get out your sketch pad and have a festive themed game for everyone to enjoy!

Have a safe, wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving. And be sure to re-visit my special Thanksgiving kids' table craft ideas and Thanksgiving Gratitude tree centerpiece for even more finishing touches for your celebration!

Green Stocking Stuffer: Calming Calendula Cream from The Organic Skin Co.

As a cloth diapering mom, my hands are especially raw and chapped from all of the soaking and hand washing I do on a daily basis. Even if I didn't use cloth diapers on my son, we use hand washing as a major means of illness prevention in our house, so our hands are at risk for becoming very dry after many sudsing up sessions!

I have discovered the perfect stocking stuffer for green moms and dads, to keep their hands silky smooth, especially during the upcoming winter season, which is particularly harsh on skin. Calming Calendula Cream from The Organic Skin Co. is the perfect antidote for dry, cracked skin. It goes on smooth, and once rubbed in, it instantly softens your hands and doesn't leave a greasy residue, which is my pet peeve when it comes to lotions and creams.

Calm and Heal Calendula Cream is certified organic and vegan, and it contains a wealth of soothing, restorative ingredients including calendula, of course, vitamin E, lemon peel, shea nut butter, rosehips and more. Read more about how the properties of these natural ingredients calm and heal skin.

In addition to this sumptuous hand cream, The Organic Skin Co. also offers a wonderful collection of high-integrity skin care products you can check out here.

BONUS: Amazon is currently offering the following special: Save 20% when you buy two or more organic skincare items from The Organic Skin Co. Enter code TOSCMB20 at checkout.

Happy shopping for these delightful stocking stuffers!

Put Down That Fork and Knife and ADOPT a Turkey for Thanksgiving

Adopting a turkey for Thanksgiving doesn't mean you have to set one more place at the table and agree to hear "gobble gobble" in your living room for years to come until your new feathered friend meets a natural demise.

Put yourself in a turkey's position: imagine the horror if there was one day a year where millions of people marked their calendars and gathered round to cook and eat you!

So, this year, dine sans bird and adopt a turkey to celebrate Thanksgiving instead. Farm Sanctuary enables you to have a compassionate holiday by sponsoring sweet birds the likes of Antoinette and Amelinda. It only costs $30 to adopt a turkey... about the same price as you'd pay to roast and serve one up at your holiday feast.

But this way, you won't get sleepy after your meal, and you can instead rest easy knowing that you saved a turkey and gave him or her a chance to live a long and peaceful life in a happy home.

5 Great Green Gifts for Boys

I feel so blessed to have a son and a daughter. It's so fun playing dress-up on one hand and racing cars on the other. This year I wrote the green gift guide for boys for Inhabitat, which I'll be linking to here from Petite Planet when it goes live, but I also wanted to give a shout out to some of the beloved toys we have in our household for Mr. A, in the hopes that your tykes can enjoy them too, perhaps as the perfect holiday gift! Above is the small Prince Lionheart Wheely Bug Tiger. This toy is so beyond adorable, and your tot will love zooming around on it. It's non-toxic and PVC free. Truth be told, Mr. A can't ride his because he doesn't yet have the coordination not to fall off of it... but I know in no time he will be off and roaring around on this sweet tiger.

Plan Toy Solid Wood Drum - makes a lovely two-toned sound. This sweet drum is recommended for ages 19 months+ and I see why, because Mr. A has been using the tip of the mallet as a chew toy. However, when I sit with him, and he knows I am watching him so he doesn't put the mallet in his mouth, he beats the drum with wild abandon and merriment.

Green Toys Blue Race Car is one of many toy cars we have... but what I love about this car as well as the Green Toys tug boat and dump truck below, is that they are all made of 100% recycled milk jugs, and they are free of BPA and phthalates. They are also totally durable and can take the kind of beating only a little boy could dish out to his toys!

I hope your little guys enjoy these toys as much as we do!

Amber Baby Teething Necklace from Amber Artisans

As parents, we often stumble upon information we wish we had previously known. Facts that could have really made our lives easier, had we known them at an earlier date! Such is the case for me with amber baby teething necklaces. So I hope you're reading this post at the perfect time to help relieve your teething babes from their painful woes of cutting teeth.

Frankly, as a green parenting writer, I have come across a ton of teethers and teething necklaces and remedies, so I am surprised that amber has only recently crossed my radar. I was at the park with Mr. A, and twin toddlers his age sauntered over to play. They were wearing matching necklaces, and when I asked their mom what they were made of, she explained that they were made of amber, which helps relieve teething pain, and that neither or her tots have ever suffered from teething issues.

I immediately hunted down the best amber baby teething necklace I could find. It's from Amber Artisans in Lithuania (they ship worldwide). Each necklace is handcrafted with Baltic Amber by expert artisans who polish and round every bead to a soft finish. The necklace comes accompanied by  a soft linen satchel to store it. I remove Mr. A's necklace for bathtime and bedtime and nap time, so I tuck it safely in the satchel at those times.

Here's what I learned: amber has a therapeutic, calming effect on wearers. It is especially good for teething babies and tots because it is a homeopathic gem that has anti-inflammatory properties. When the necklace is worn, the skin's warmth releases trace amounts of amber's healing, pain relieving oils, which help babies stay calmer and more relaxed when teething.

Here's more on the fascinating healing powers of amber, from the Amber Artisans website:

"Amber has been used for a variety of medically related reasons such as a natural analgesic, helping to fight inflammation, infections and respiratory disease. When you place the amber necklace next to your baby's warm skin, the amber releases healing oils which are naturally absorbed via the skin into the bloodstream. The powerful oils contain a very special ingredient known as succinic acid. Extensive scientific research bears witness to the fact that succinic acid can do wonders on the human body. For examples, succinic acid stimulates the thyroid glands to help reduce drooling, soothing red and inflamed gums and enhances calmative, analgesic, antispasmodic, expectorant, and febrifuge (anti-fever) functions."

Like I said, I wish I had an amber necklace for Miss O to wear when she was teething, and I wish I had gotten one for Mr. A long ago, as he has nearly all of his teeth now. Both of my kids have had harrowing teething journeys, and I would have loved to try this homeopathic approach from the get-go.

Falling Hard for Ko-Ko-Ko Kids DIY Fall Leaf Art

How absolutely precious is this DIY fall leaf art from Ko-Ko-Ko Kids? Miss O, Mr. A and I go on daily walks and collect tons of fallen leaves and flower petals to make art, but my ideas for the art projects we do with fall leaves thus far don't hold a candle to these cute creations -- and seeing all of these examples of the adorable creatures you can fashion from careful, yet simple positioning of fall leaves is so inspirational! We'll definitely be trying to make these leaf animals this week in our house!

Natural Remedies to Help Kids Avoid and Fight Colds & Flu

Just a few things I have added to my germ-fighting bag of tricks since we're full swing into cold and flu season, and we seem to keep catching every cold and passing it between each family member. Just as one gets better, the next falls ill. Hmmph.

Above, I have started Miss O on Nordic Naturals Omega 3-6-9-D Junior, as both a supplement to her somewhat limited diet, and a protector against the flu virus. Evidently, you can fight the flu naturally with vitamin D, so sign me (and her) up.

When and if your little one (12 months and older) does get a nasty cold with an unrelenting cough, you must have Zarbee's All-Natural Children's Cough Syrup on hand. Comprised of buckwheat honey and immune-boosting vitamins, this safe and effective cough remedy is gluten free and contains no drugs, alcohol or dyes. If your tot's cough is keeping her up all night, try Zarbee's Nighttime Cough and Sleep Drink as well!

My favorite hand-sanitizer brand, CleanWell is branching out and has recently added disinfectants to their green and clean collection. Get their disinfectant spray (above) and their disinfectant wipes (below) and slip them into your stroller or diaper bag. On the go, clean off airplane trays, changing stations, grocery cart handles, restaurant high chairs and booster seats... you name it! These products are antibacterial and antiviral, and they kill 99.99% of germs (including influenza virus) on hard, non-porous surfaces, using botanical, non-toxic ingredients. Yes, please! Purchase here.

Finally, if your children are AT ALL open to neti pot rinses... they are a highly effective, wonderful way to rinse germs from the nasal passages, before they take root in the body and cause illness. Read about my favorite neti pot here.

*Special Note* Readers: I am not a doctor. I'm just a mom doing research to try to keep my family healthy in a green manner. These are all just suggestions from me, a mom doing my best! Please consult your child's pediatrician before giving him any medications or supplements.

Guavamitts from Guavakids Keep Baby's Hands Cozy and Germ Free

Parents know all too well how frustrating it can be trying to keep tiny mittens to stay put on teeny hands. So when I came across these adorable new mittens for wee ones, I had to share them with you -- because I wish they had been around for my kids!

Guavakids, a duo of Portland mamas, makes these sweet mittens, called guavamitts, which are made from a super soft, cozy and eco-friendly bamboo blend. Their two-part closure system ensures they stay on, and their engaging designs keep baby intrigued.

These mittens are not only cute accessories to keep baby's hands warm on chilly days and nights, they are also great for keeping germs at bay during the upcoming cold season.

If you're in the Portland area, pick up a pair of Guavakids mittens at Grasshopper, one of my favorite toy stores, which is also a Petite Planet sponsor! Or purchase online here.
